About Our Puppies

Puppy Care:

Starting from day one, our puppies are checked over, handled, and doted on. We have a very hands on approach and provide these precious babies with the utmost care. Healthy puppies start with a healthy mother. Our mothers are kept up to date on dewormings and vaccinations and are fed a high quality kibble diet with some additional raw feeding and supplements. After the puppies arrive, we make sure they get plenty of colostrum from their mother which will provide crucial antibodies and passive immunity to protect them over the first couple months of life. While in our care they are kept in the cleanest environment possible. Dewormings start at two weeks old and continue every two weeks up until they are able to leave for their new homes. As ears and eyes start opening, we expose them to different environments, objects, toys, and sounds. We hope to have them well adjusted and used to many different things by the time they are weaned and heading off to their new homes. As puppies start the weaning process, we introduce them to a mix of wet and dry Purina Pro Plan puppy food, along with K9 Puppy Gold formula soaked in warm water to be sure they're getting plenty of quality nutrition as they transition onto a solid diet. By seven to eight weeks old, they are eating dry puppy kibble and will be ready to leave soon. Our puppies are generally able to leave just after eight weeks old, no sooner. We might keep puppies for an additional week or so if we think it would be beneficial for them. We want them well adjusted by the time they're ready to go so that the transition into their new home is as easy as possible for them and the new owners. With some exceptions, at about seven to eight weeks old, they will have their first vet visit and vaccinations. Our vet will give them a check up to ensure puppies are healthy and ready to head off to their new home. Please ask or look over the individual litter page for details about each litter as there might be some exceptions to this depending on the circumstances. Once their first vaccination and final deworming is complete, they are ready to go!

Tails and Dew Claws:

We do not and will not dock tails or remove front dew claws. Australian Cattle Dogs should always have a tail. The breed standard calls for an intact tail of good brush that stops near the hock. Not only are their tails beautiful, but they are used for communication and act as a rudder and counterbalance which helps them do their jobs properly, especially during tight turns and maneuvers while herding cattle. Front dew claws are also important as they're used for gripping and traction. Comparable to our thumbs, there are blood vessels, nerves, and bone. As long as they're attached properly, removing them can do more harm than good. There is also research showing dew claw removal may contribute to early onset arthritis, discomfort, or pain. For this reason, we do not remove them.

Health Testing:

We test our dogs for PRA-PRCD, PLL, and DM before breeding. Their test results are each listed on the Cowboys and Cowgirls pages with their individual information. All puppies produced by us will always be A (clear) or B (carrier), never C (affected) so you don't have to worry about your puppy going blind later in life from PLL, PRA-PRCD, or RCD4. You will also not have to worry about your puppy suffering from DM (Degenerative Myelopathy) which is an inherited spinal degenerative disorder similar to Lou Gehrig's disease in people. We do not OFA or BAER our dogs or puppies at this time, but hope to find a vet that offers this in the future. Our goal is to produce the healthiest puppies possible.

Registration:

All of the dogs in our breeding program are American Kennel Club (AKC) registered. Our puppies come with an AKC registration application at time of purchase. We require that the KW Farms name starts at the beginning of their registered name.

Pricing:

The majority of our puppies are sold with limited AKC registration for $1,500 to pet homes. These puppies are not to be used for breeding and are to be spayed or neutered at an appropriate age. We sometimes have puppies available with show and breeding rights which are sold with full AKC registration for $2,000 to show and breeding homes. Only the best of the best are offered on full registration.

Reserving A Puppy:

If interested in acquiring a puppy from us, please start by filling out our puppy application above. We keep an email notification list for those interested in puppies and upcoming litters. Once we have your application on file, we'll add you to the email notification list and contact you as puppies become available. Being added to the list is not a guarantee of obtaining a puppy. It is not a waiting list. It's only a way to be notified when puppies are available. When a litter reaches about six weeks old, we'll notify you about which puppies are available. We'll then begin accepting half down, non-refundable deposits to hold. At this age, their color and personalities are coming in. We'll have a fairly good idea on what their adult color will look like and we'll be able to evaluate individual traits and temperaments to some extent. Deposits are handled by invoice through Paypal or by check or money order. We will send you the payment details privately. Once a deposit is received, the puppy will be placed on hold until they're ready to leave. Our puppies are generally ready at eight weeks old or shortly thereafter. We will schedule a pick up day with you that is convenient for us both.

Puppy Updates:

We strive for weekly photo and/or video updates of each litter. They grow and change quickly and it's amazing to see what a difference one week can make. We will post updates on our Facebook page here: KW Farms Australian Cattle Dogs Be sure to give us a like and click the "Follow" and "See First" options to get all updates.

Puppy Pick Up:

Once your puppy reaches eight weeks old, they are usually ready to go home! We do not offer shipping at this time so expect to pick up your puppy at our farm in Wapato, Washington 98951. We will give you our address privately and arrange a day and time that works for both of us. All of our puppies come with a health record (vaccination/deworming history, etc.), their pedigree and AKC registration application, a bag of kibble, and a goodie bag. Please be sure when coming to get your puppy that you leave any dogs you may already have at home, wear a clean pair of shoes, and wash your hands before leaving. This is for biosecurity reasons. We don't want to take any unnecessary risks exposing our dogs and puppies to outside germs. Lastly, we accept cash only on pick up days. No checks or credit cards will be accepted, sorry.
